Open Cool Treats
Fans for fursuiters in the shape of various treats and foods
What is this?
Open Cool Treats is an idea for a line of fans designed primarily for fursuiters, though anyone can use them. They are shaped after various treats and foods, so that fursuiters can cool off with a photogenic prop
The actual product itself is completely open source and free to download the code and models for, for those that feel comfortable doing programming and soldering
Or, for those who prefer a ready-to-go product, custom pre-assembled ones will be for sale. They come in two levels, "Plus" and "Premium"
It is currently still in the prototype phase, with an unknown time of completion, but I think it will be a nice product for fursuiters
What is the difference between the Plus and Premium versions?
Firstly, I just want to clarify that the differences between the two versions are purely internal. There will be no external designs exclusive to one version or the other. I do not belive this is fair to anyone.
Plus is for those who just want a simple fan prop, without any fancy extras. It will be the more affordable version and be powered by a 9V battery and a switch to turn it on and off.
Premium has additional nice to have features, as well as a longer battery life. Premium will be offered with a 2,200 mAh, 4,400 mAh, 6,600 mAh, and 10,000 mAh capacity lithium ion battery
Both versions will achieve the same goal of cooling off a fursuiter with a fan, so if you just want that, Plus is what you want. If you want longer battery life, variable fan speed, and rotational activation of the fan, Premium is what you want.
Both versions will be able to have an upgrade that adds a second fan, but be aware of the impact that will have on runtime!
How much are the different versions?
If you 3D print and build it yourself, the cost is just materials. The models and instructions will be free forever.
Pricing for pre-assembled ones depends on the version, battery capacity, and if you requested a custom design.
My current goal is to have the Plus version go for $50 USD or less, and have the Premium version go for $140 USD or less, neither option accounting for custom designs.
Why do the different versions cost what they do?
Cost of materials, mainly. I am using off-the-shelf parts for everything but the case, which is custom. To give an idea of the costs, on the premium models, the battery charger controller alone is about $20.
It's probably overkill, but I would rather have the extra capability and safety and not use it. I would much rather use the more expensive but more quality parts, rather than dig through the bargain bin.
I would never want to risk anyone's safety, especially when it comes to lithium ion batteries.
It was also important to me that it used parts already out there, that way people are actually able to build their own, and brings the "open" part to life. That immediately eliminated custom PCBs, because I dont want to be the sole provider of certain parts for this.
What upgrades are there?
There is a dual fan upgrade, which adds a second fan. I am also potentially planning a Noctua fan upgrade, but only if I can actually determine whether or not it is quieter than the currently planned fan.
There is also an upgrade for custom color schemes, though it's only $5
What is the expected battery life?
Note that these are estimates based on theoretical power usage. No actual testing has been done on battery life yet.
On a Plus version, it depends on what kind of 9V battery you use. Assuming constant running time, an alkaline battery should last 4 to 5 hours, and a lithium battery 9 to 10 hours. Half those runtimes for the dual fan versions.
On a Premium version, it further varies depending on the battery size and fan speed setting. The estimated worst runtime is a dual fan version with a bunch of unrealistic overhead on max speed with the 2200mAh battery, being just shy of 2.5 hours.
The same assumptions with the 4400mAh, 6600mAh, and 10000mAh batteries result in 4.9, 7.3, and 11.1 hour runtimes respectively. Again, this is worst case, and is frankly completely unrealistic.
Can I upgrade my Plus to a Premium or downgrade my Premium to a Plus?
At this point in time, my goal is to have both versions use the same models aside from the plate where the buttons are. Time will tell if this is realistically possible, but hopefully the final answer is yes
Can I assemble and sell Open Cool Treats using your models?
I would prefer if you didn't do that, because then that means you are using my work for your own profit. I worked hard to make my own designs.
Please also do not steal and sell someone else's models without their permission.
Can I make my own models that use your instructions for assembly?
You absolutely can! Please just credit me for the instructions, bill of materials, and code. You can even sell Open Cool Treats that use your own models if you want, and dont have to pay me a cent for royalties or anything like that. Just please do not try to say that they're endorsed by me or that I had any involvement in your design.
Where did you come up with this idea?
While at Further Confusion 2025, I saw people in line to use the elevator at the Hilton hotel, and noticed some of the fursuiters with those fan boxes in their mouth.
It got me thinking about them, but the idea really sprouted when later in the convention, I saw one in the shape of a popsicle. From there, I just kept developing it in my head until I could get home and work on the idea properly.
I did some brief searching to see if there was something like this out there already, and the ones I saw lacked some features and physical looks that I thought would be cool, so I started working on my own version too.
Why should I go for your fan and not someone else's?
I dont know how others have made their fans. They could even just be existing necklace fans but in a different case. But mine is open source and 100% transparent. Able to be assembled by yourself, and a full, comprehensive list of parts and materials, along with my justifications on why I chose what I did.
If you buy a pre-assembled one, you are getting a product assembled by hand and finished with love out of Arizona, and supporting an individual that loves to tinker and make stuff, supports open source content, and enjoys experimenting and sharing the gained knowledge for all.
Additionally, this one is made out of PETG, a more durable and heat resistant material than most others that are printed out of PLA. PETG softens at a 15C/59F higher temp than PLA, and is not nearly as brittle, meaning it doesn't shatter like PLA does.
You are stealing my or someone else's idea!
I know this is not a 100% original idea, but I promise that every feature and style is one that I thought of on my own. Additionally, every non-electronic part is one of my own design and making, unless I say otherwise.
If you feel that I have stolen something, and you are the creator of that something, please get in contact with me at one of my social media links below.
I do wish to talk about it and dispel any possible misunderstandings. I dont want bad blood.
Why are you doing this?
Because fursuiters no doubt want to stay cool, but shoving a rectangle into their suit's mouth might break the magic for some. I can't really remember the last time I saw a non-infant sapient creature shoving an inedible object into its mouth.
Disguising it as treats or food makes it much less likely to break the magic, while still allowing fursuiters to not overheat. It also gives the fursuiter a prop to do whatever they want with.
There's something that I don't understand
If something here is hard to understand or confusing, please contact me at one of my social media links below. I am more than happy to clarify anything. It also lets me know if I need to re-word something to be less confusing.
